Comfort

My first five days in the Philippines were extremely uncomfortable. Since arriving in the last week of March, I had to adjust to a lot of things other than the time difference. I had to adjust to continuously sweating, being hot and sticky all the time. I had to adjust to the conditions of the places that I stayed at, whether it be a home with no shower, a room with no air conditioning or no wifi connection. I had to force myself not to complain and whine about these things because even a single “Ugh, it’s soooo hot”, can distract the heart of why we are here: To celebrate and experience Jesus Christ as a Youth For Christ.

Our discomfort or unwillingness to be uncomfortable can impede the call to mission work. God doesn’t call us to be comfortable in this world. He calls us beyond our comfort, because there is still work to be done. God calls us because there is a need, and that need might not be what you like, or what you’re comfortable with. He calls when we are vulnerable, and scared, because the only way to do His work is to do it with full reliance on His power and strength.

I thank God for this time here in the Philippines, and the revelations He has shown me so far.

Finding Joy

Often times, in the midst of service and our every day activities, it is very hard to find joy in the things we do. Things get so busy and schedules are so hectic. Sometimes, we forget how enjoyable things can be. And then, coming back from an event as big as the International Leaders’ Conference, it is that much harder to not compare its success to other events. But if we are to always compare one event to another, we would never get anywhere. We sometimes forget that we must do everything with love, and if we do it with love, the work and its fruits will always be enjoyable.

If we do and acknowledge everything with love, we will recognize that victories are not only in the big events, but in the small ones as well! Victories that are seen even in the small things are victories seen in humility, and are victories claimed in His name. If we acknowledge that His presence is in every person and in every thing, we will be able to claim endless victories in His name, and wear a face of joy and rejoice! We must look at our lives with a lens big enough to see not only the big things, but the small things as well, and through a lens of simplicity so that we may always see God.

Our joy is the best means to preach Christianity“.
– Mother Teresa

If we wear a face of joy, then people will not only hear us say that our God is enough, but FEEL the truth of the significance of His presence in our lives… that He is enough.

May He always be praised!

DEO GLORIA!

Meditate don’t anticipate.

You feel light, weightless.
Your eyes are shut; each inhalation is a rejoice in oxygen.
Each exhalation is a release of stress; a release of the suffocating carbon-dioxide.

With each breath, you sense the feeling of getting lighter and lighter.
Your mind slowly clears away from any thought, any feeling, any worries.
You look within and your heart is smiling; you are at peace.
Your eyes slowly open. Your gaze is soft.
You open your eyes and look down.
You see your body,
eyes closed,
sitting in your room in a cross-legged position.
You are no longer in your body but in your very own essence; your soul.

For school I’ve been taking classes of Christian Theology and on different religions which include Hinduism and Buddhism. I have noticed various differences as well as many similarities between these religions. One similarity that attracts me is the idea of meditation; meditatio.

During my readings of the Bible and in the text, Paramahansa Yogananda’s Autobiography of a Yogi, it is depicted that the human body is seen as the temple.

Our bodies are temples, but yet a temple can fall if it is not built on the right foundation. Therefore is it seen that the human body is weak unless it is supported by a higher power greater than oneself: God.
This can be obtained either through the power of prayer, through meditation.

Believe it or not, but Catholics meditate! We meditate and we might not even know it…It occurred to me this past week how meditation is such an important aspect in our prayer time as it is one of the steps we must keep in mine during Lectio Divina: Lectio, Meditatio, Oratio, and Contemplatio.

It is essential in communicating with God.

When one meditates; it is the notion of trying to get our minds away from the things of this world. Meditation is a way to clear our minds of worries, emotions, and thoughts of anything that is lingering in our heads and to focus solely on God.

This sounds easy, but it very difficult.
It is very difficult due to the fact that our minds and our brains are constantly processing thoughts and ideas back and forth subconsciously.
Therefore, once we try to focus and clear our minds it is difficult because, for most people, we are not accustomed to it.
Meditation is the work of the mind and soul
and not of the body and its surroundings.
This is why some people find it hard to concentrate
because they are so preoccupied with what the body is trying to tell them
rather than what God is.

For example, we might be thinking to ourselves,
“It’s so hot in here!”
“Is he looking at me”
“is my hair ok?” or
“I’m hungry!”

The body sends us so many signals
that it hinders us from the true beauty of meditation.

We have difficulties concentrating because it is a fact that
the body constantly desires and longs for satisfaction.
The goal is to not give in to the bodily pleasure
but to stay in tune with the Spirit.

Humans desire and they don’t know what they really want. But in the end, our ultimate desire is true happiness, which can only be obtained through God.

We want to be inspired. We can question on our own.

But we can all agree that human desire is strong and can be selfish at times. However, in this book, I found it very interesting how a Hindu practitioner refers to Therese Neumann, a member of the Third Order of St. Francis, a Catholic mystic and Stigmatist.

The author, Yogananda, acknowledges Therese Neumann as one of the few people who used their body for good and enabled the Holy Spirit to take care of her. Yogananda wanted to meet Therese because, for one, she was a woman of God, and two she was given Stigmata (the experience of Christ’s death wounds) and on top of that she abstains from any kind of food and eats solely the Eucharist from her 6 am mass every morning. The miracle about this is that even though she hasn’t eaten anything she is more vibrant than ever and she glows. Even though a big fraction of the human population gives in to their desire there are a number of people who counter it with good deeds and sincere minds: Therese was one of them. Yogananda was in awe of Therese’s ability and determination, yet along her love for God where she was able to fully give herself to Him and allow the Spirit to take control of her body through meditation and through the meditation of God’s light and love.

Therese Neumann once said to Yogananda when he visited her,

“One of the reasons I am here on earth today is to prove that man can live by God’s invisible light, and not by food only.”

Brothers and Sisters, this inspires me.

To believe, and for once, to not question.

This goes to show that even though the human body is weak, there are people out there who’s will is strong and believe that the body is sacred and keeps it that way. There are people who are called to inspire.

When we meditate we allow ourselves to be listen and hear God’s word in the midst of our hearts.

The Lord will enable us to do great things.

He allows us to enter into intimate dialogue with Him.

Lord, may we be inspired to take the time to meditate and acknowledge your Holy Presence in our lives. Allow us to seek You as our sole nourishment. Let us question what needs to be questioned, but let our faith be even stronger.

Let our faith inspire.

Lord, allow us to mediate and not to anticipate.

Amen 🙂

It Begins With LOVE

Love, it is simple. It requires sacrifice.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
– John 3:16

This passage shows us an act of utmost selflessness; of utmost love. God loves us so much that He sacrificed His only Son so that we might be saved. SACRIFICE. We say that love requires sacrifice, but do we really know what this means? Do we really understand the extent of this sacrifice?

“Sacrifice, in order to be genuine, has to empty us of ourselves.”
– Mother Teresa

What I have learned in my mission trip to the Philippines is that sacrifice is not just about enduring. It is not about persevering. It is not about being able to last a few weeks in situations where you are uncomfortable, and enduring it until the 14th day, longing for that haven. Sacrifice is much more than that. It is enduring and persevering and letting go, giving up all that you have if you have to, not knowing what you’ll come back to, but trusting completely in the Lord. During my trip in the Philippines, the Lord truly conditioned not only my body, but my heart and my soul. I have realized that mission must be done with sacrifice in order to be done out of love.

I was taking a shower, thinking about how it would’ve been better to shower the previous day instead of the morning because the water probably wouldn’t have chilled overnight. The chilly night probably made the water colder and that’s why it felt freezing cold. I told myself that it was okay. I would just have to endure it for 2 more days. Then, as soon as I said that, in the midst of all the complaints and the hope of the day the ice cold “tabo” (bucket) showers would come to an end, the Lord truly humbled me and tested me, “You say ‘Endure it for 2 more days.’ The rest of you tell yourselves ‘Endure it for one more week.’ Think of my people! How many of my children do I bring into this world to say ‘It’s okay…endure it…try to get used to it. It will be for the rest of your life…’?? Out of the selfishness and arrogance of others, my children suffer. Erin, If I were to call you right now… If I were to ask you to stay right here with my people and start your mission now, would you do it??” And at that point, all I could say was YES, LORD, I LOVE YOU… I WILL.

I realized, then, that mission is not about enduring or persevering, but it is about BEING. “Being and bringing Christ wherever I am.” Christ came down into earth to BECOME us. He humbled Himself to feel the hardships and pain we felt. If we are called to love one another as He has loved us… to be and bring Him wherever we are, then in order to complete our mission, we are called to love in complete sacrifice as well. Not just the sacrifice of material things or physical things, but to renounce myself and let God fill me.

It was at that moment that I truly realized that mission is about being the people He sends you to, and not enduring what they endure. To be effective missionaries, we must serve His people by being them. By letting go of what makes us comfortable and being ready to dive into the uncomfortable because it is there, in that sacrifice (of self), that we will find God. It is there that we will find unity, and it is there that we can truly bring His love…one person at a time.

It begins with LOVE.

Wear Jesus

I took the bus going to downtown to hear the noon time mass. As I was walking to the bus stop, the people waiting there were staring at me but I did not make a big deal of it. Then while waiting for the train a lot more people were looking at me and it continued on when I got on the train as people were coming in and out. Lastly, walking from the train station to the church, which was 3 blocks away, around 80% of the people’s gaze was following me.

I’ve never been so eager to get inside the church as that moment. I was wondering why people were staring at me or just looking at me weirdly. When I got in the church I sat on my usual spot and that’s when I realized. It’s my shirt! I am wearing the new shirt from Ablaze which has a huge face of Jesus printed in front and the word Saviour (with a definition) printed at the back.

Candy in JC shirt2

Praise GOD that I was not conscious of wearing this shirt. Coz if I was, I may not be walking as confidently as I was. Why does it feel like I should be more careful so as not to offend someone? When in fact I am just being truthful of our real identity.

“Lord Jesus, God of everything. I praise you for revealing your greatness to me. May I always seek you in every way and reflect you in every situation. May your Holy Spirit grant me the boldness and courage to not be afraid to always bring you to other people in whatever way it will be.

Keep Calm and Worship

have you ever had those days when your mind won’t slow down.. like those days when there are a lot of things are going through your mind and it’s hard to focus and complete the task at hand.. or like those days when you want to sleep but you can’t so your mind drifts and starts actively thinking? (I don’t know if I’m making sense here. hopefully I am)
I have a lot of those days.. the mind just loves to keep working haha
but don’t get me wrong.. it’s a good thing the mind is working, it’s a part of living.
however there are those days when the mind needs to tone down a little so information can be processed and organized.

For me, one of the ways that helps me calm my mind is worship or singing (ha! hehe).
When there are things happening and thoughts going through my mind like school, responsibilities, family, people, emotions etc.
blasting some liveloud songs, Hillsong songs, kari Jobe etc. eases the traffic jam and lagging going on in my hard drive hehe
it allows me to get rid of the doubts, worries and negativity and place them into His hands.
“give your all in the tasks before you and leave the rest in Him.”
